The first deed for the property is dated back to 1951. At an unknown date, the Red Dog Saloon was moved onto the property. We were told it was used on an old movie set. The building has its quirks, with all entry points and windows located on the front of the building, which we chalk up to its Hollywood days. We were also told that the saloon was used to host a fundraiser for Ronald Reagan during his presidential campaign in 1980. The only evidence we have of this is a copy of a drawing, signed by Reagan himself, that was allegedly distributed at the event. We have not been able to verify much else about our beloved Red Dog Saloon’s provenance.

In 1984, the property was deeded to Faustino Silva. We believe he may have planted the original vines.

In 2014, brothers Steve and Phil Streng purchased the property. Steve, a real estate broker, and Phil, a builder, embarked on a journey to fix up the vineyard, restore the Red Dog Saloon, and build a spectacular home. Together they demolished the original residence, added solar power, a bocce court, and a horseshoe pit! Their work was completed in 2016 and the property hit the market again in 2017.

In 2018, Angela McGuire was spending weekends touring open houses with her son, Robert, who was in the market for a starter home. One weekend in February, she suggested visiting a property that she’d seen listed in a local paper… "just for fun". The views from the home were stunning, the kitchen was large and equipped to accommodate “Iron Chef Dinner Parties,” and the open house host was offering samples of wine made on property. Angela and Rob returned home, gushed about the property to Patrick, the patriarch, and went about their lives. In July 2018, Angela noticed the home was again open for visitors. This time she visited with Patrick. A few days later, much to Angela’s astonishment, Patrick suggested that they put a bid on the property! The fates and spirit guides all conspired to facilitate the sale and, voila, the McGuire family became vineyard owners in September 2018.

The plan is to eventually open the Red Dog Saloon as the Sloughhouse Vineyard tasting room. However, the facility is not ADA-compliant and we will not open until it is. It is surprisingly difficult to find a contractor who will provide a reasonable bid to complete the work and return to actually do it.
